The painter of this panel is referred to as the Master LCZ.
This gifted, little-known painter was active in close proximity to Dürer. His masterpiece is the Strache Altar of which comes the Christ before Pilate. (Other parts of the altarpiece are in Darmstadt, Nuremberg, Paris, and private collection.) Original, glowing, almost pastel-like, yet deeply expressive in colouring, this artist's art broke with the literal, descriptive mode of the immediate past.
