Sigismund was the crowned ruler of Sweden for some five years. This fashionable portrait shows the gentleman-king of Poland in up-to-the-minute neck ruff and high-crowned hat, and with a well-turned leg. Only the inscription identifies his status. This may be because Poland's monarchy became elective in 1572.
