These are the earliest ornamented wooden church doors to survive in their entirety, and they are an example of the use of narrative art in a public context. They represent the main events of Christ's life, beginning with the Annunciation, in which the Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she is to bear the Son of God, as foretold by the prophet Isaiah, and culminating in the Pentecost, when the Twelve Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit, represented by tongues of fire over their heads. The facial profiles of the figures with their beak-like noses, are typical of German art.
