The depiction of Christ lying in the Madonna's lap, his head fallen back and his right arm hanging down lifelessly, is a pictorial type common in Nordic Pietà sculptures of the fourteenth and fifteenth century. In these Pietà scenes the Virgin Mary usually turns her head toward Christ in mourning.
