Mandylion is the name given to an image of Christ, which, unlike other such images, was not formed by human hand, but miraculously created by an imprint going back to Christ Himself. The term goes back to an Arabic word, mandil or mindil, which means cloth or towel, thus indicating the material of the picture.
Icons that reproduce the Mandylion show the portrait of Christ frontally and without neck or shoulders on the background of a cloth. The hair has a parting, falling to the shoulders on either side.
