MAZZONI, Sebastiano
(b. ca. 1611, Firenze, d. 1678, Venezia)

St Benedict Presents Pasqualino Daneli to the Virgin

1648
Oil on canvas, 400 x 269 cm
San Beneto, Venice

This dynamic composition is from the artist's early maturity, influenced by Bernardo Strozzi and the Venetian use of tone. Mazzoni blended Tuscan-Lombard nuances of tone with Baroque theatricality and s Strozzi-style naturalism.

With a companion piece depicting St Benedict in glory, this work frames the triumphal arch of the church.
