MICHELANGELO Buonarroti
(b. 1475, Caprese, d. 1564, Roma)

St Matthew

1503
Marble, height 271 cm
Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence

The unfinished figure of Matthew has survived as evidence of a commission given to Michelangelo by the Arte della Lana in 1503. The artist was commissioned to produce a total of 12 figures depicting the Apostles, which was destined for Florence cathedral. However, only the incomplete figure of Matthew was produced before the commission was cancelled when Michelangelo left for Rome in 1505.
