Abraham and Hagar

-
Oil on panel, 94 x 131 cm
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid

The panel describes the moment when Abraham bids farewell to Hagar, the handmaid of his wife Sarah and mother of his son Ishmael. The artist portrays various elements of the story at the same time - from the incident when Ishmael attacks his half-brother (Sarah's son), leading him to be cast out, to Hagar and Ishmael on their journey, during which an angel appears to show them the right way. The narrative gives the artist the chance to paint an extensive landscape which forms the backdrop to the entire story.
