Farmhouse Interior

Oil on oak, 50 x 68 cm

Isaack van Ostade, like his brother Adriaen, depicted peasant and low-life scenes. This untidy farmhouse interior is typical of Haarlem painting in the first half of the seventeenth century, with its low-key use of colour. The painting would be taken as a warning against a dissolute life.
