Paolo and his sons Luca and Giovanni signed the shutters of this golden altarpiece on April 22, 1345, noting that it had been commissioned by the doge Andrea Dandolo. In the upper register are St John, St Mark, the Virgin Supporting the Dead ChristSt John the Evangelist, St Peter and St Nicholas. In the lower register Scenes from the life of St Mark are depicted.

This work marks the birth of Venetian narrative painting.
