The statue was commissioned by Eugenio Durazzo in 1679 when the enlargment and the decoration of the Palazzo Balbi Durazzo (presently Palazzo Reale) was begun. The statue was placed in the private chapel at the second floor of the palace.
The artist was influenced by contemporary Spanish sculptors who frequently represented the pathetic image of Christ at the column.
