The figure of Vice represents the giant Tityus, the traditional personification of vice punished. He is one of the four legendary figures who are customarily linked in Greek mythology (the others are Ixion, Sisyphus and Tantalus) because they all underwent punishment in Tartarus for various offences. Tityus was a giant who tried to rape the mother of Apollo and Diana and was cilled by their arrows. He was stretched out, pegged to the ground, while two vultures eternally tore at his liver.
