PIETRO DA CORTONA
(b. 1596, Cortona, d. 1669, Roma)

Study for the Age of Silver

c. 1635
Black chalk and white lead on blue paper, 400 x 251 mm
Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

Pietro da Cortona created a figure that is both monumental and borne aloft upon horizontal draperies. In the final fresco, in Palazzo Pitti's Sala della Stufa, the artist evidently corrected for the height of the fresco, since the foreshortening is more marked in the drawing.
