Pulpit (detail)

1301
Marble, height 62 cm
Sant'Andrea, Pistoia

The picture shows a sibyl from the pulpit. This dramatic figure, inspired by an angel who appears over her shoulder, can be compared to Michelangelo's much later Lybian Sibyl. Her excitement is communicated by the turn of her head, the zigzag movement of the figure, and the flow and flicker of the drapery.
