Artus Quellinus immortalised burgomaster Andries de Graeff (1611-1678) as if he were a Roman consul, an allusion also made in the Latin inscription on the plinth. The bust demonstrates the sculptor's familiarity with the latest development in Italian Baroque sculpture.
