Raphael made drawings for his tapestry cartoons, just as he did for his paintings. The figure of St Paul was adopted into the final version almost unchanged, but the positions of the figures to right and left in the cartoon were changed markedly. The man in the centre with his finger laid reflectively on his lips was abandoned entirely. It is possible that live models from Raphael's workshop posed for this drawing.
