Under the upper layer of paint there is an earlier version of the same subject executed by Rembrandt 10 years before. The small panel exhibited in Mauritshuis, The Hague, is probaly a study to this original painting.
The painting was once owned by Sir Joshua Reynolds, who was among Rembrandt's greatest admirers.
