(b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam)

Self-Portrait with Saskia

1636
Etching, second state of three, 103 x 92 cm
Teylers Museum, Haarlem

Catalogue number: Bartsch 19.

Here Rembrandt was seeing his wife Saskia in a mirror.

Rembrandt did not leave us with a portrait of himself in the midst of his kin. There are also no portraits of himself with Geertge, Hendrickje or Titus. However, there are two images, a painting and an etching, that shows Rembrandt with Saskia. In the print, we see the artist, a chalkholder in his hand, presumably staring into the mirror while making the print before us.
