Until the early nineteenth century this canvas was thought to be by Rembrandt, representing his son, Titus van Rijn (1641-1668). Presently it is considered a canvas painted by an unknown Rembrandt follower in the last few decades of the seventeenth century. The painting shows similarities with several earlier works by Rembrandt.
