Equestrian Statue of King William III

c. 1730
Bronze, height 37 cm
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Willem III, stadholder of the Dutch Republic, became a European leader with a royal touch, championing the politics of balance of power and Protestantism. His marriage to Mary Stuart brought him the throne of England. In 1688 he was crowned king of England, Scotland and Ireland as William III.

His equestrian statue, which portrays him as a Roman general, was executed by Rysbrack about forty years later, it is on the market square in Bristol. The statue in the Rijksmuseum is a copy made by the artist himself.
