SAVERY, Roelandt
(b. 1576, Courtrai, d. 1639, Utrecht)

Landscape with Wild Beasts

c. 1629
Oil on wood, 35 x 49 cm
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

Savery was a Flemish painter of landscapes, animals and flowers, trained in Amsterdam. He worked in Prague and Vienna in the sevice of Emperors Rudolf II and Mathias, but later settled in Utrecht.

This painting shows Savery at his best. The subject reflects the great scientific interest in nature which was characteristic of the period.
