This watercolour was a study to the Madonna of the Rose Bush painted in 1473 (Colmar). When Dürer visited Schongauer in 1491 Schongauer was already dead but Dürer received several drawings of Schongauer from his brothers, among them this study. Dürer's studies of flowers in the first years of the 1500s reflects the knowledge of Schongauer' studies.
