Swags of Flowers

1646
Oil on canvas, 124 x 94 cm
Private collection

This signed and dated painting represents swags of flowers adorning a grisaille cartouche with the Virgin and Child. The figures and the cartouche were probably painted by Erasmus Quellinus II. Collaborative paintings that combined history subjects with flower still-lifes are among the most beautiful paintings produced by Flemish artists in the seventeenth century.
