SEGHERS, Hercules
(b. ca. 1590, Haarlem, d. ca. 1638, The Hague)

The Great Tree

Etching, 22 x 28 cm
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Seghers led a strange, solitary life, absorbed in his researches, particularly into the technique of engraving. His romantic visions of nature may well have inspired Rembrandt, who owned some of his engravings.
