SLODTZ, René-Michel
(b. 1705, Paris, d. 1764, Paris)

Iphigenia, Princess of Diana

-
Marble, height 75 cm
Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon

Slodtz's work contains significant echoes of Classical sculpture. His Iphigenia has an enigmatic smile, a somewhat vacant look, and pure, smooth features that are obviously meant to be a resurrection of Attic sculpture. Yet he is capable of conceiving large dynamic Baroque compositions. His work, like that of a few other eighteenth-century artists, looks forward to the eclecticism of the nineteenth century.
