Portrait of Cecilia Guardi Tiepolo

1757
Pastel on paper
Museo del Settecento Veneziano, Ca' Rezzonico, Venice

This fine pastel portrait by Lorenzo Tiepolo, Giambattista Tiepolo's son and assistant, represents his mother, Cecilia Guardi Tiepolo, dating from 1757 as written on the back beside the artist's signature. This refined painting, marked by delicate shaded tones that are an evident tribute to the manner of Rosalba Carriera, is one of the first works by the then 21 year-old artist. It is a precious and important foretaste of his subsequent work in Madrid, where Lorenzo followed his father in 1762 and remained until his death in 1776.
