Red-Haired Girl in Monsieur Forest's Garden (Carmen Gaudin)

1889
Oil on canvas, 65 x 54 cm
Private collection

The model for this painting is Carmen Gaudin, who regularly modelled for Lautrec from 1885 to 1889. She is sitting in a garden or small park-like area below Montmartre's cemetery. The owner of this half-wild, half-cultivated garden was Père Forest, an enthusiastic archer. The garden was open to the public, thus Lautrec, whose studio was nearby, often came here to paint in the open air.
