Herm of Bacchus

1773-74
Bronze and alabaster, height 175 cm
Galleria Borghese, Rome

This sculpture, a precocious example of Roman Neoclassicism, is a revival of the ancient classical tradition of the herm. The torso was carved from a rare veined alabaster by the sculptor Ferdinando Lisandroni.
