A Kaag and a Smalschip at Anchor

1660-65
Oil on oak panel, 26 x 36 cm
Private collection

The painting depicts a kaag (a passenger boat) and a smalschip (meaning narrow ship, took its name from its ability to negotiate locks on inland waterways) at anchor in a light breeze close to the shore. The marked influence of Simon de Vlieger lends support to an early date for the painting, perhaps even before 1660.
