Ships in all their detailed individuality were Willem van de Velde's speciality. He often sailed with the Dutch and later the British navies, drawing studies that, once ashore, he painted as grisailles, such as this one. He made the sketch for this work at sea during the outbreak of the Third Anglo-Dutch War in 1672.
