Landscape

1622
Oil on oak panel, 28 x 34 cm
Private collection

The painting depicts a landscape with travellers crossing a bridge before a small dwelling, horsemen in the foreground. It can be assumed that this painting represents an imaginary landscape. The rocky, rugged landscape may have been inspired by the work of Roelandt Savery and Gillis Claesz. de Hondecoeter and a number of features within the scene recur (with some variations) in other works by Van de Velde of a similar date.
