WOUWERMAN, Philips
(b. 1619, Haarlem, d. 1668, Haarlem)

Halt of a Hunting Party

c. 1665
Oil on canvas, 56 x 83 cm
Dulwich Picture Gallery, London

This painting features two opulently dressed couples and their servants, stopping to rest by a river. While one couple has already settled down to rest, the other couple still sit on their horses. Wouwerman reserved a small area for genre-like scenes in many of his paintings. Here the little dog on the right seems to be thumbing its nose, so to speak, at the aristocratic elegance of the scene.
