Church of Saint-Pierre-de-la-Tour, Aulnay-de-Saintogne

The capitals in many Romanesque churches depicts animals or humans in bond, mainly formed of coiled vines which were believed to form part of Satan's hunting weapons. These scenes sometimes contained sexual and even faecal aspects. In the example from the former collegiate church of Saint-Pierre-de-la-Tour in Aulnay-de-Saintogne (Charente-Maritime), the vine foliage is being excreted by an anus demon who is holding his legs up in order to be able to set Satan's bonds on their faecal way into the world, where they will turn into devilish snares for sinners.
