Tribune for the choir (detail)

1150s
Marble
Church of Notre-Dame, Serrabone

Separated from the shaft by toruses, the capitals of the choir tribune in the former priory church of Notre-Dame in Serrabone are in high relief, and the impost blocks are surrounded with rosette, palmette and vine ornaments. The figures depicted consist of a variety of grotesque creatures which are standing on the toruses. The heads of these figures are mostly facing outwards, underneath the corner volutes, in many cases they flank a human head or mask.
