ROMANESQUE SCULPTOR, French

Abbey church, Moissac

The picture shows the left wall of the porch of the abbey church at Moissac. The realistic style of the sculpture on the side walls of the porch (note, for instance, the sores on Lazarus's body) is in contrast to the more hieratic, sublime style of the tympanum. This can be explained by the difference in subject. The relief shows (from right to left): Dives feasting, dogs licking Lazarus's sores while an angel receives his soul, and Lazarus in Abraham's bosom. The lower relief shows the death of Dives and a damnation scene. Below this there are personifications of lust and greed (these are badly eroded).
