An antique device adopted by Romanesque sculptors was the triumphal arch. The associations of imperial power and victory attached to this architectural form are grafted on to a Christian theme. An important example of its use is the imposing entrance portal added in the middle of the twelfth century to the early eleventh-century church of the famous abbey of Santa María de Ripoll in the foothills of the eastern Pyrenées.
