Tympanum

c. 1220
Stone
Notre-Dame, Paris

The central portal of the west façade of Notre-Dame depicts the Last Judgment. At the centre of the upper register of the tympanum of the central doorway, Christ sits on his judgment throne. The attending figures, the Virgin and St John, are kneeling in the bottom corners of the tympanum. Christ appears as the Saviour and not as the fearsome Judge. He is enthroned above the Heavenly Jerusalem with its four towers that stand for both the four elements and the four evangelists. Below his feet is the scene of the weighing of souls. The lintel is a 19th-century reconstruction.

The picture shows the tympanum of the central doorway of the west portal.
