Portal relief

1196-1216
Stone
Baptistery, Parma

The relief above the north portal of the Baptistery in Parma depicts the Adoration of magi (left), and Joseph warned by an angel (right). On the lintel below are scenes from the life of St John the Baptist: the baptism of Christ, the feast of Herod and the beheading of the Baptist.

A tympanum with reliefs above the portal is normal in French churches of the period but rare in Italy except along the pilgrim roads. The Parma tympanum is in fact closely modelled on an earlier one in the abbey church of St-Gilles in Languedoc.
