MEDIEVAL SCULPTOR, Spanish
(active 1230-1240)

La Portada del Sarmental

c. 1235
Stone
Cathedral, Burgos

Up to c. 1220, Spanish sculpture remained almost untouched by the style of French sculpture. In the 1220s a number of complete portals directly inspired by French models were created. The greatest complex of Early Gothic sculpture is on the cathedral at Burgos.

The stylistic inspiration of the portal on the south transept (La Portada del Sarmental) comes from Amiens, it seems likely that the sculptor of the portal had actually worked there.
