MEDIEVAL SCULPTOR, Italian
(active early 12th century in Lombardy)

Pulpit

1100s
Marble
San Giulio, Orta

The pulpit on the island of San Giulio, in Lake Orta, is rightly considered one of the major works of Lombard sculpture in the beginning of the 12th century. The "barbarian" strain in Italian Romanesque art produced few works of such expressive force and such powerful vitality, employing means of such economy. Fabulous monsters, legendary characters, and highly imaginative foliage motifs are handled with great restraint in broad areas of flat relief carving. An intense life and a wild, spirited force lie under the apparent monumental solidity of the decoration.
