MEDIEVAL SCULPTOR, German

Timo von Kistritz

c. 1250
Stone
Cathedral, Naumburg

Extremely significant in the Naumburg series of founders' figures is the deliberate portrayal of personality, and although this group still retains much of the Gothic dispassion, the idea of presenting psychological types with naked realism is a step towards representing people as individuals with personal characteristics. Particularly remarkable is the presentation of good and evil, the good man and bad man. Eckehart and Uta belongs to the first type, Timo von Kistritz to the second.
