Manuscripts produced in Reichenau for the Ottonian emperors (1000-1030)

The school of miniaturists that formed in the Benedictine Abbey at Reichenau on Lake Constance and developed into an outstanding cultural centre carried out a great deal of works for the emperors of the Ottonian-Saxon dynasty: Otto III (reigned 980-1002) and Henry II (reigned 1002-1024). Their high reputation is based on a creative period of surprisingly few years around the turn of the 10th to the 11th century. The most famous examples of the manuscripts produced by this group are the Gospel Book of Otto III, the Bamberg Apocalypse and the Gospel Lectionary of Henry II
