One of the illustrations in the St Albans Psalter is of the Annunciation. It contains an iconographic innovation, depicting the Virgin Mary with an open book in her lap. She looks as if she has just been interrupted in her reading by the miraculous appearance of the Archangel Gabriel. The use of this motif indicates a greater literacy at this time among both noble and religious women. The extensive use of purple and the paneled background reflect the influence of German art.
