This manuscript is a fragment, a Picture Bible which was probably the prefatory cycle preceding a Psalter.
This miniature depicting the Martyrdom of St Lawrence is a detail from the illumination on folio 28v of this manuscript, coming from the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Bertin in Saint-Omer (now in ruins). The saint was roasted on a gridiron.
