Le Roman de Fauvel

c. 1316
Manuscript (MS Fr 146)
Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris

The manuscript contains a poetic narrative written between 1310 and 1314 by Gervais de Bus with interpolations of over 150 monophonic songs and polyphonic motets. The name Fauvel is derived from the first letters of Vices: Flaterie, Avarice, Vilanie, Variété, Envie, Lascheté. The Roman is a sharp attack on the failings of the medieval church and the political establishment.

The manuscript is a collection of literary and musical works, a group of political tracts, and an important chronicle. The principal work is Chaillou de Pesstain's edition of Le Roman de Fauvel, a satirical, allegorical narrative.

The miniature on folio 36 depicts French court entertainment. A company of actors play wild men or 'woodwoses' before a distinguished audience of lords and ladies, but to the consternation of the little dog.
