Santa Maria Assunta, Torcello

The interior of the main apse of the cathedral of Torcello is wholly covered with a vast mosaic with a gold ground. It represents the Madonna and the twelve Apostles.

The mosaic, remodeled under Bishop Orso Orseolo in 1108, was presumably completed around the middle of the eleventh century, and the majority of the apostle figures beneath the Madonna can be attributed to the same period.
