GOTHIC GLASS PAINTER, French

Annunciation

1325
Stained glass window
St.-Ouen, Rouen

The Annunciation is located in the northeast window of the axial chapel (the Lady Chapel) in the church of St.-Ouen in Rouen. The Virgin stands under a rich canopy, behind which extends a red foliate background. Her pose forms an elegant S-curve, and the drapery plays around her solid, rounded body in loose, hanging folds.

The figured style of the Rouen windows is linked with the latest advances in Parisian painting, notably those developed in the circle of the illuminator Jean Pucelle.
