This figure is perhaps the prototype of all reliquary statues. Consisting of a wooden core entirely sheathed in gold set with enamel, gemstones, cameos, and precious stones, its aesthetic value must be calculated by the goldsmith's measure rather than the sculptor's. It is really an idol, more symbol than figure; enthroned, with arms outstretched, the saint attains magical force. Reliquary statues were rejected by some contemporary clerics.
The head dates from the late Empire (5th century?).
