Ewer with scenes

1320s
Silver gilt and translucent enamel, height 22,5 cm
National Museum, Copenhagen

This ewer is a 'pochon temproir', so-called because, as the vessel that held the water to mix with wine, it became associated with the virtue of temperance.

The main scenes around the centre of the body of the ewer narrate a fable or romance involving a feat. This narrative still awaits interpretation.
