The most impressive piece of work produced by the goldsmiths' ateliers was the altarpiece, which attained great size and formed the luxurious and ostentatious version of the painted or carved altarpiece. The altarpiece of Gerona Cathedral, surmounted by an astonishing baldachin and composed of prefabricated parts assembled over a wooden core, shows in each of its details, particularly in the execution of figures and architectural structures, the monumental ambitions of the goldsmiths.
